Castlewood Library
The Supple Collection provided consulting and fabrication services for the Castlewood Library. Collaborating with Elements Design and Oz Architecture, we implemented innovative design solutions to modernize a historic space and increase its value to the community.
Ali Johnston was the project manager from Oz Architecture who directed and inspired this work. Together, we were able to problem-solve and develop thoughtful designs that aligned with the architecture firm’s vision. These designs included customized versions of our Jump service points, Jelly mobile bookshelves, Canopy shelves, and End Panels.
The service points were added to the library’s front entrance and children’s section. A curved aesthetic and 3Form colored acrylic gave them an elegant, polished appearance. All remaining items were made using Formica Compact, a versatile, durable phenolic resin cored material that provides generous design flexibility and strength. Then, a stylish patterned finish was used throughout to create a cohesive look.
Intensive customization was vital at every phase. With this approach, we were able to implement solutions that enabled varied shelf configurations, personal computer access, and vertical storage.
Because the library was scheduled to reopen during the COVID-19 pandemic, safety mechanisms were also high priority. Sneezeguards were installed in areas where high levels of social interaction would take place. These were designed to be height-adjustable, self-standing units. Powder-coated steel and bent acrylic were used for added rigidity.
We hope that with these new additions, the library will become an even more vibrant resource for its community that facilitates lifelong learning
